Turmeric. It’s what I call the magical spice. The brightly orange colored powder originates from Southeast Asia and is used in curries, rice, vegetable, meat, and fish dishes to naturally add a beautiful golden color.
The root-based plant is made up of a group of compounds called curcuminoids, which contain the special ingredient, curcumin. The curcumin component in turmeric allows it to be anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and honestly, the list could go on. - Cold and Cough Killer
Anytime I hear a friend or family member starting to get sick, I tell them the same thing every time: make some turmeric tea! It’s simple, quick, and though it doesn’t taste super great, it’s really effective! The anti-microbial and anti-bacterial benefits of turmeric act fast to kill your cough and cold symptoms to make you feel better in no time. Want to learn how to make it? Take a teacup of water (make sure it’s microwave safe!), microwave it for a minute or two until it’s at the heat level you’re comfortable drinking, mix in a teaspoon of turmeric powder, mix, and you’re good to go! If you want it to taste slightly less gross, add a teaspoon of honey! It’ll naturally sweeten the tea and amp up the bacteria fighting power.
- Soothing Inflammation in Joints
If you’ve sprained an arm or a leg, have arthritis, or just regular old bone and joint pain, turmeric tablets might just become your best friend. Research has shown that turmeric could replace the use of typical anti-inflammatory drugs containing ibuprofen and be just as good.
- Spot Treatment
Remember what I said about turmeric being anti-inflammatory? Well, guess what? It can be used topically too. When you have a nasty pimple that’s turned into a horn protruding from your face, unfortunately no makeup will be able to cover it up. Instead, let the pimple heal and reduce in size naturally. How? Mix a pinch (or as much as needed) of turmeric with honey and make a paste. Apply it to wherever your angry zit is and before you know it, it’ll be totally flat! Prefer an all over acne treatment? - Glowing Goddess Skin
All that anti-bacterial and anti-microbial goodness comes to great use for glowing skin when mixed with yogurt. Yogurt contains lactic acid which will smooth and brighten the skin, leaving you looking flawless. Interested? Take one to two tablespoons (add more if you’d like) of plain yogurt (I prefer Greek), a teaspoon of turmeric powder (be careful to always have more yogurt than turmeric otherwise too much of the spice will stain your face yellow), mix, and apply evenly over the face. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and look at your skin glow! Want to amp up the anti-bacterial benefits? Add a teaspoon of honey to the mix. Want to amp up the brightening benefits? Add a teaspoon of lemon juice.
